Disability isn’t just a matter of individual circumstance, it’s a reflection of our systems, policies, and collective attitudes. In India, structural barriers, ableist mindsets, and deep-rooted social inequalities continue to prevent millions of specially abled individuals from accessing the opportunities they deserve. This exclusion is magnified when disability intersects with other forms of marginalisation, such as caste, class, gender, or race, forcing many into a life of precarity, without access to stable income, education, or even basic services.
In the informal economy, where most unskilled and semi-skilled laborers in India work, any form of impairment often pushes individuals out of employment completely. Despite the protections promised by the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act of 2016, only 36% of specially abled individuals are employed, according to India’s 2011 census. Legal provisions may exist, but real, on-the-ground change remains minimal.
While the gig economy in India continues to grow, it rarely includes individuals with disabilities, primarily due to a lack of accessible training, tailored upskilling programs, and inclusive hiring practices. It’s not ability that’s missing—it’s opportunity.
For these individuals, it is skill training that always provides a real and practical route to many greater opportunities. Through this, they are able to sustain steady employment and income, and significantly raise their standard and quality of life. They are also finally able to have access to basic and crucial services such as medical care, housing, and food security. Thus, there is an urgent need for targeted interventions to address these systemic inequalities and help enhance the quality of life for specially abled individuals.
